Causes for TMD include:
- Trauma to the TMJ.
- Habits such as grinding and clenching of the teeth.
- Improper or changed bite.
- Emotional stress.
- Arthritis.
- Weak neck and shoulder muscle.
Symptoms of TMD could be:
- Pain in the jaw, cheekbones, ears or eyes.
- Difficulty in opening or closing the mouth, or moving the jaw side to side.
- Locking of jaw.
- Pain while chewing food.
- Ringing in the ears.
- Frequent headaches
- Clicking or popping sounds when opening or closing the mouth.
- Feeling of a heavier bite on one side of the mouth or a feeling that the teeth do not meet comfortably on biting.
- Pain felt in teeth or gums
- Aching facial pain.
