Healthy Gums – The Key to a Great Smile
Gums are the pink tissue that cover the jaws and surround teeth. Increasingly, they are becoming central to aesthetic dentistry and its quest to obtain the perfect smile. This is mostly because of the inherent difficulty in treating the gums due to their unique nature.
The gums, however, are more than a mere cosmetic entity. They play a pivotal role in protecting the underlying bone and hence preserve the teeth within the jaw. They also attach themselves to the teeth and prevent infection from entering the body.
As dentists, we often see cases where the gums don’t receive the care that they deserve. This leads to many problems including bleeding upon brushing and swelling of the gums. Sometimes, the gums lift away from the teeth, creating unsightly gaps between them.
Happily, these problems are easily prevented by timely care and attention. In most cases, a combination of proper toothbrushing, flossing, mouthwashes and periodic visits to a dentist will keep your gums healthy and trouble-free always.
