Myofunctional Therapy

Helping your mouth, tongue, lips, and facial muscles work the way they should

Myofunctional therapy is a personalised programme of exercises and techniques designed to improve the strength, coordination, and function of the muscles of the face, mouth, tongue, and jaw.

The way we breathe, swallow, chew, speak, and rest our tongue and lips are all connected. When these muscles are not functioning efficiently, it can sometimes contribute to concerns such as mouth breathing, an incorrect tongue resting position, swallowing difficulties, speech-related concerns, snoring, or orthodontic relapse.

Myofunctional therapy focuses on identifying these functional patterns and helping the muscles develop healthier, more efficient habits.

What does myofunctional therapy involve?

Treatment is tailored to each individual. Depending on your needs, therapy may include exercises and techniques to help improve:

  • Tongue posture and function

  • Lip strength and closure

  • Nasal breathing and breathing patterns

  • Swallowing patterns

  • Chewing and oral muscle coordination

  • Jaw and facial muscle function

  • Resting posture of the tongue, lips, and jaw

The goal is not simply to perform exercises, but to help your muscles learn and maintain more functional patterns in everyday life.

Who may benefit?

Myofunctional therapy may be recommended for children, teenagers, or adults who experience or have been identified with concerns such as:

  • Persistent mouth breathing

  • Open-mouth resting posture

  • Incorrect tongue resting position

  • Tongue thrust or an atypical swallowing pattern

  • Difficulty maintaining nasal breathing

  • Snoring or sleep-related breathing concerns

  • Certain speech or oral-motor difficulties

  • Orthodontic relapse or concerns about maintaining orthodontic results

  • Jaw, facial, or oral muscle dysfunction

Myofunctional therapy is often most effective when it forms part of a multidisciplinary approach, working alongside dental, orthodontic, ENT, speech and language, physiotherapy, or other appropriate care when needed.

What can we achieve?

The aim of therapy is to help you develop better oral and facial muscle function and healthier habits.

Depending on the individual, treatment may help with:

  • Establishing a more appropriate tongue resting posture

  • Improving lip seal and nasal breathing habits

  • Developing a more efficient swallowing pattern

  • Improving oral and facial muscle coordination

  • Supporting orthodontic stability

  • Improving awareness of breathing and oral habits

  • Supporting more comfortable and efficient everyday oral function

Every patient is different, and results depend on the underlying problem, age, consistency with exercises, and other factors. Myofunctional therapy is not a quick fix—it requires regular practice and active participation.

What to expect

Your first appointment involves a detailed assessment of your oral and facial muscle function, breathing patterns, tongue posture, swallowing, and related habits.

Based on the assessment, we will develop an individualised treatment programme and guide you through exercises that can be practised at home.

Small, consistent changes can make a meaningful difference. The aim is to help you build functional habits that become natural and sustainable over time.

If you think you or your child may benefit from myofunctional therapy, we would be happy to assess your individual needs and discuss whether it is appropriate for you.
